George Ware Fulton Sr. first arrived in Matagorda Bay in February of 1837 with an organized troop of 60 men to volunteer to fight in the Texas Revolution. The revolution had been concluded by that time; however, George went on to volunteer in the Army of the Republic of Texas. He received a commission as a second lieutenant and served the republic proudly. As a reward for his service, Fulton received 1280 acres. He chose the Aransas area to claim his land.
Fulton joined the first General Land Office working for John P. Borden the first commissioner.His primary duty was to move all the ancient land archives from San Antonio to Houston. He became very knowledgeable in this area of expertise, particularly as a surveyor, engineer, businessman and in land acquisition.
During this time, he formed a friendship with Henry Smith, and in 1840, married Harriet Smith, his oldest daughter.During the early years, Fulton helped promote Aransas City on Live Oak Peninsula, and development of the waterways. The Fulton’s left Texas in 1846 but returned 1851 upon the death of Henry Smith. George was appointed executor of the estate. Harriet inherited a sizeable amount of land from her father’s estate.
